Day 17; Picnic

Today was our second rest day; only 8 miles to walk and then our feet were free for the rest of the day. We slept in until 8.15, and then Cheryl joined us for our walk into Dumfries. We were finished by midday and by this time the clouds had cleared and the weather was sunny once again.

We got food for a picnic (enough for a small army I felt) and found a pleasant area along the grassy embankment of a river that ran through the town. Dumfries was the biggest town we had been to, after Glasgow (of course) and seemed a little like a ghost town- where the houses hadn't been renovated since the early 60's and the shops didn't look more promising either. The picnic however was full of every delight Kate and I could wish for; smoked salmon, chicken, salads, Scottish strawberrys, and of course Haagen Dazs.

We relaxed in the sunshine afterwards before heading back to our guest house. Kate's mum, Melinda was there to meet us- she would be spending the next 5 days with us, and we had been very excited for her arrival. I received a phone call from a good friend, Miles- a motivational speaker (just the kind of man you need for this) he gave his words of wisdom and experience- it was so lovely to hear from him.

After saying goodbye to Jc and Cheryl, the three of us headed for dinner. I enjoyed a bath once we got home and then into bed. One third of the way there today-370 miles complete. And we finish one month today- and we were starting to love it!
